Biochar
RWANDA, known for its warm climate, rolling green hills, and dense population, is a nation deeply rooted in agriculture. Approximately 75% of Rwandans work in the agricultural sector, with most being smallholder farmers. However, the country faces the dual challenge of soil degradation—caused by overuse to feed a rapidly growing population—and the worsening impacts of climate change.^1
SOILS are positively impacted by the application of biochar, which has been refined over four years of testing across various districts in Rwanda. Our method maximizes yields while being accessible and adaptable to local farmers. - Yields have doubled compared to traditional fertilization methods (corn, tomatoes). - Biochar improves plant survival during dry periods. - Higher germination rates lead to stronger harvests.
CLIMATE JUSTICE is at the heart of our approach. At RecyCoal, we believe in climate justice. Our farmers are the driving force of our carbon removal mission, which is why 50% of the revenue from our carbon credits goes directly to them, helping improve their livelihoods. - Farmers can start small businesses, invest in livestock, or pay for their children’s school fees. - They gain both economic empowerment and practical knowledge, enabling them to thrive sustainably while contributing to climate action.
“It’s a game-changer for the farmers and the environment.” - Dieudonne Sindikubwabo, Head of Programs, ROAM
Meet Francoise: A Pioneer in Sustainable Farming
Francoise, one of the first to join RecyCoal, impressed us with his meticulous record-keeping and dedication. Since partnering with us, he has doubled his crop yields and ventured into livestock farming. With the income from selling carbon credits, Francoise started a small pig farm, which not only provides him with sustainable income but also supports his composting efforts. His growing herd is a symbol of entrepreneurial spirit and sustainable success.
Meet Jeanne: A Changemaker in Agriculture
Jeanne’s determination and energy are truly inspiring. She quickly mastered RecyCoal’s methods, leading to the best tomato harvest in her village. Her success enabled her to purchase a motorcycle, revolutionizing her family’s transportation. Her husband now uses it as a taxi, creating an additional income stream. Jeanne’s story showcases how women can uplift their families and communities.
Meet Epiphanie: A Visionary with Quiet Strength
Epiphanie recognized the potential of biochar not just for her family but for her entire community. Using her own harvest residues and collecting agricultural waste from neighbors, she produced extra biochar, sharing it with her community while earning additional income. Her entrepreneurial thinking turned waste into value, benefiting both her family and her neighbors. Epiphanie’s journey highlights the power of collaboration and foresight in building sustainable futures.
