Sustainable Grassland Management
Project Highlights
Project Description
Central Mongolia's soil, a massive carbon reservoir, faces degradation threatening its 1500 Gigatonnes carbon storage. The Pastures, Conservation, and Climate Action project, a collaboration between the University of Leicester and the Mongolian Society for Range Management, addresses this by preventing CO2 release in central Mongolia.
Nomads, facing economic pressures, overgraze limited areas, releasing stored carbon. Carbon removal credits sales offer income alternatives, preserving their traditional way of life. Three regions - Tov Aimag, Arkanghai Aimag, and Bayankhongor Soum benefit, with local Hesegs leading and reporting to MSRM.
Utilizing Plan Vivo's SHAMBA methodology, the project empowers nomads to manage lands sustainably. Restoration efforts cover 77,000 hectares, storing 100,000 metric tonnes of carbon annually over a 4-year commitment period. Beyond environmental impact, the project enhances nomadic communities' access to education, healthcare, and socio-economic development while preserving their unique lifestyles.
