Improved Forest Management
Project Highlights
Project Description
The NativState - Bottomland Forests of the Mississippi Delta and Coastal Plains aggregates forestlands from across the eco-regions of eastern and southern Arkansas with a commitment to sustainable forest management and provides significant climate benefits through carbon sequestration from native forests.
More than 80% of bottomland hardwood forests have been lost since European settlement, mostly to agriculture, and much of the remnant forest occurs in small, isolated tracts. NativState forest carbon projects give landowners an alternative to converting their forests for farming, thus protecting biodiversity and further loss of habitat. Bottomland hardwood forests provide numerous ecosystem services, including water quality protection, carbon sequestration and economic benefits from outdoor recreation and tourism. The region is considered the heart of the Mississippi Flyway, where more than 40 percent of North America’s waterfowl and 60 percent of all U.S. bird species migrate for winter, and more than 100 different types of land birds breed.
“NativState forest carbon revenue will help our family conserve our forest and improve wildlife habitat so future generations will enjoy the beauty and abundance of this land.” -Steve Burke, Participating Landowner
