Heartland Methane Abatement and Land Restoration Project 2

Industrial Process Emissions Reduction

Technical details

Orphaned oil and gas wells continue to emit methane into the atmosphere long after they have stopped producing hydrocarbons for sale. This poses significant health and environmental risks to landowners and nearby natural resources.

As of May 2023, Oklahoma had over 17,000 documented orphaned wells, with the state's plugging program averaging about 140 wells per year over the past decade. Despite additional federal funding, state resources have been unable to keep up.

To address the growing need for methane abatement, Rebellion Energy has assumed responsibility for 6 orphaned oil and gas wells across four counties in Oklahoma to execute proper plugging and remediation measures. This will permanently abate methane emissions from the orphaned wells. Additionally, these wells pose health and well-being risks to the landowners and threaten proximal natural resources.

Project Activities include quantifying leaking methane from orphaned oil and gas wells and the subsequent mitigation of leaking methane via permanent plugging of wellbores by in-house oil and gas industry specialists. Methane abatement is confirmed post-plugging. Our petroleum engineers identify stable baseline emission measurements that are indicative of a 20-year carbon crediting period as required in the ACR methodology. In addition, as a voluntary benefit, land restoration will be conducted in and around the well sites. This project is mapped to several UN SDGs.
