Project Description:

Since its inception in 2011, Halo Verde stands as an agroforestry, land restoration, and sustainable agriculture project in Timor-Leste. Managed by the NGO Fundação Carbon Offset Timor (FCOTI) in partnership with GTNT, Australia, the project addresses the threat of deforestation in Timor-Leste, a small island nation in Southeast Asia.

Utilizing the Small-Holder agriculture mitigation and baseline assessment methodology of the Plan Vivo standard, Halo Verde generates carbon credits from its sustainable practices. The proceeds from credit sales ensure fair compensation for local communities and contribute to maintaining the forest ecosystem.

Covering an area of 150 hectares, Halo Verde has planted over 250,000 trees. This afforestation and reforestation effort involves over 1,000 farmers and benefits 150 households. The project not only provides an alternative source of income and food through agroforestry on barren lands but also addresses soil degradation caused by deforestation.

Continuous monitoring and regular audits, certified in accordance with the Plan Vivo standard, ensure the additional nature of carbon credits and minimize project risks. The benefits extend beyond monetary compensation, including micro-grants for women, scholarships for disadvantaged children, and the preservation of the natural biodiversity of the region.

Halo Verde serves as a model for sustainable land use and community development, demonstrating the positive impact that carbon offset projects can have on both the environment and local livelihoods.
